How Does Yeast Imbalance Affect Vaginal Health?

Yeast infections are common, in fact, most women get one at least once in their lifetime.  However, women are usually unaware of the link between the balance of yeast in the vagina and vaginal health.

How Does Yeast Imbalance Affect Vaginal Health?

An imbalance of yeast in the vagina increases the risk of a yeast infection. The vaginal microflora contains an array of microorganisms including yeast and bacteria, which all play a role in vaginal health.

The bacteria in the vagina is a mixture of  ‘good’ or beneficial bacteria known as lactobacilli and ‘bad’ bacteria.  The lactobacilli generally dominate, and when they are in abundance they create an acidic environment which keeps the yeast and bad bacteria in check.

Lactobacilli also provides protection against pathogens and infections.  However, if the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disrupted, an overgrowth of yeast can occur, resulting in a yeast infection.

A yeast infection can cause symptoms such as itching, irritation, pain with urination, and discharge.  These symptoms have traditionally been treated with anti-fungal medication.  Although this may provide temporary relief, the yeast infection will recur if the yeast imbalance in the vagina is not resolved.

Correcting Yeast Imbalance In The Vagina

When the vaginal microorganisms are out of balance there is typically an altered vaginal microflora pattern. In order to correct the yeast imbalance, it’s necessary to first identify the altered vaginal microflora pattern present.  Dr. R. Stuart Fowler of Fowler GYN International has developed the vaginal fluid analysis (VFA) test to assist this process.  The VFA test provides a quantitative analysis of the vaginal constituents.

If an overgrowth of yeast is identified, FGI can formulate a personalized treatment protocol to restore a normal microflora pattern.

If you think you may be experiencing symptoms related to a yeast imbalance, contact Fowler GYN International at www.fowlergyninternational.com, or by calling (480) 420-4001.  FGI is located in Paradise Valley, AZ.
