Are you thinking about having LASIK to correct your vision? If you are, you’re probably wondering what to expect after surgery is over, and how much downtime is needed after LASIK.
LASIK surgery
LASIK (Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) is a vision correction procedure that uses an excimer laser to address farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK reshapes the cornea so that light entering the eye can be focused on the retina, enabling clearer vision.
During LASIK, a surgical tool is used to create a thin corneal flap, which is folded backwards so that the laser can be used to reshape the cornea as required. A precise amount of tissue is removed to make the cornea steeper to correct farsightedness, or flatter to correct nearsightedness. The corneal flap is then replaced, and the area heals within a few hours.
How much downtime is needed after LASIK
Recovery after LASIK is minimal, as healing takes place quickly. Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities the day after surgery. Patients will need someone to drive them home from the procedure, and doctors suggest that they take a nap when they get home. Some improvement in vision is usually noticeable within 6-8 hours of LASIK. A follow-up visit is required in the first 24-48 hours, to ensure that there are no complications (click here to learn more).
Patients are given antibiotic eye drops along with anti-inflammatory drops that need to be used routinely for several weeks after surgery.
