Wrinkles around the eyes make you look tired and older than you are, but botox treatment can make you appear refreshed and more youthful. Botox is an incredibly popular wrinkle smoother that is quick, affordable, and requires no downtime. But is it safe to get botox near your eyes?
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. It is a neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscle, which makes it very effective for dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form as a result of the repeated contraction of the facial muscles related to expressions such as smiling, squinting, and frowning.
When botox is injected into the muscles, it blocks the nerve-muscle communication, so the muscles are unable to contract. As a result, the skin becomes smooth, and wrinkles are less noticeable.
Is it safe to get botox near your eyes?
Botox is FDA cleared for treating crow’s feet, which are the fine lines at the corner of the eyes, so it is safe for use near the eyes. Botox is very safe when used in extremely small therapeutic doses, and has a good safety record.
Botox is a well-established drug that was originally used by ophthalmologists to treat strabismus (misalignment of the eye) and eye spasms. Treatment involves injecting small doses of botox into the muscles surrounding the eye.
Although botox is relatively safe, side-effects may occur. These include swelling, pain, or bruising at the injection site. For best results, botox must only be administered by a qualified, experienced medical practitioner.
