Is your tattoo holding you back? If so, and you’ve decided to have laser tattoo removal done, you may be wondering if it’s going to be painful. Laser tattoo removal is a quick, convenient way to get rid of an unwanted tattoo, but is it painful?
Is Laser Tattoo Removal Painful?
Laser tattoo removal can cause some pain, but the level of discomfort is not the same for every patient. Some patients don’t find laser tattoo removal painful at all, while others with low pain tolerance are very sensitive to the treatment.
Also, laser tattoo removal tends to be more painful in areas with less fat such as the neck or ankle, than areas with more fat like the buttocks or arms. Patients often describe the sensation of the laser as similar to having a rubber band popped against the skin.
Laser tattoo removal is uncomfortable but is mostly well-tolerated. Patients generally agree that removing a tattoo is a lot less painful than getting one inked.
Clients with sensitive skin may opt to have a topical anesthetic cream applied to their skin before the start of treatment, to help minimize discomfort.
How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
The light energy from the laser penetrates the skin and is selectively absorbed by the ink particles in the deep dermis. When the ink particles absorb the laser energy they are broken up into tiny fragments. The fragments are then naturally removed from the body over the following weeks. The tattoo will appear lighter and lighter with subsequent treatments.
Depending on the type of laser used, the size of the tattoo, and the colors, it can take anywhere from 2-15 treatments to completely remove a tattoo.
