If you would like to get rid of extra skin or fat around the midsection, a tummy tuck can tone and tighten your midsection. A tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution, but it can affect the appetite. It is important to know this and other facts, before making a decision about surgery.
Tummy tuck procedure
A Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is generally performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. During the operation, the surgeon will make a low incision just above the pubic area. The length of the incision varies, depending on the amount of skin and fat that needs to be removed. The surgeon will also tighten the underlying abdominal muscles that have been weakened or separated as a result of pregnancy.
What to expect after surgery
There is typically some bruising and swelling after tummy tuck surgery, and most patients need to take at least 1 week off work. However, those with physically demanding jobs may need an additional week off.
Should My Appetite Change With a Tummy Tuck?
Some patients experience a change in appetite after a tummy tuck. This is often the case for patients that have their abdominal muscles tightened during surgery. The internal tightening may create a sensation of fullness and as a result, patients may notice a reduction in appetite.
Although a tummy tuck may change appetite and result in minor weight loss, this side-effect is temporary. The appetite usually returns to normal within a few weeks, after the swelling has resolved.
