What causes Psoriasis?

Living with psoriasis can be challenging, and it often affects the well-being and quality of life of those who suffer from it. Although it is not contagious, those who have it often feel self-conscious about the associated patches, and therefore seek immediate treatment. Let’s take a look at what causes psoriasis, and how it can be treated.

What causes psoriasis?
Research is continuing into the cause of psoriasis, but the disease is strongly linked to genetics and the immune system.

While the precise cause of psoriasis has not yet been determined, there are specific factors that are known to trigger it. These include stress, certain medications, skin lesions, and weather extremes.

Psoriasis accelerates cell turnover. It causes the rapid growth of skin cells that do not shed, but instead form scaly patches and crusty flakes on the skin. These patches often itch, causing a lot of distress for those with the condition.

Psoriasis occurs equally in males and females. It can affect any part of the body, but is most often seen in the hands, face, and feet.

Treatment
Successful treatment of psoriasis often requires a combination of options. At the Skin Care Center, Chicago, IL, we can develop a customized treatment plan to ease your psoriasis symptoms.  Treatment may include the following:

  • Phototherapy using narrow band light. The skin is exposed to narrow bands of UV light that penetrate the skin, and this helps to slow the growth of skin cells that are affected.
  • Excimer laser therapy. These lasers emit intense wavelengths of UVB light that target the problem cells directly, without harming the surrounding skin.
