When can I start washing my hair after a FUE hair transplantation procedure?

Hair transplants were once very rare, but arenow as popular as ever. Thanks to advanced techniques such as follicular unit extraction (FUE), patients can get a natural hairline with less pain and downtime. Patients are usually very satisfied with their results, but are often curious to find out – When can I start washing my hair after a FUE hair transplant.

What is FUE?
FUE is a hair harvesting method in which follicular units of hair are individually extracted from the donor area, and then transplanted to the thinning area. The procedure is generally performed under local anesthetic, in order to minimize discomfort. TheFUE technique is often preferred because it does not leave a linear scar and no sutures are required, therefore recovery time is faster (learn more).

When to wash your hair after FUE
There are differing views regarding when is the best time to start washing hair after a FUE hair transplant. However, washing is usually not recommended until the grafts are adequately healed, and this usually takes 7-14 days. Washing before that time could dislodge the grafts, and compromise the final results.

The post-op instructions vary among medical practitioners, as it often depends on a patient’s specific needs. Some doctors advisepatients to shampoo 2-3 days after surgery, so as to get rid of any crusts on the scalp, and ensure that no scabs form around the hair shaft. They also provide patients with a gentle shampoo for washing the scalp.

FUE has helped to improve outcomes for hair transplant patients by creating natural, permanent results.
