The use of indoor tanning beds remains widespread in the US, especially among the younger population. The goal of achieving a bronze glow without having to spend time in the sun is still desired by many, despite health concerns raised by tanning beds. Tanning beds are designed to mimic the tan you would get if you were exposed to direct sunlight. But are tanning beds safe?

What is a tanning bed?
A tanning bed is an indoor device that emits UV radiation, allowing users to get an artificial tan. The tanning bed is usually horizontal in shape with enough room that allows you to lie comfortably inside with the lid closed. What Are Potential Latisse Side Effects?

Clinical studies conducted prior to its release confirm that Latisse does make the lashes grow, but before using the product, it’s important to find out what are the potential Latisse side effects.

Latisse works well to grow eyelashes, and also makes them thicker and darker. How to keep your children’s eyes safe during athletics

It’s spring, so you should encourage your kids to get outside and participate in sports and other outdoor activities. Exercise and social interaction is great for their overall well-being, but there are risks that you must be aware of, especially as it relates to eye injuries. So be sure to take the necessary steps to keep your children’s eyes safe during athletics and other activities.

Each year about 400,000 children in the US suffer eye injuries, mainly from sports such as tennis, basketball, baseball, and badminton. However it can happen in any sport. Being hit in the eye can result in eye trauma. While trauma to the eye is usually temporary, it can lead to long term vision impairment, so it’s important to pay attention to eye safety.

1.    Do make sure that your children have the correct protective eye gear for the type of sports they’re playing. The eyewear should be made of material that is impact and scratch resistant, so that it can safeguard your child from the inevitable pokes and jabs they will encounter during play.

2.    Do provide children who wear prescription eyeglasses with protective eyewear. Remember that eyeglasses are not made to protect the eyes. The lenses can break or shatter during play, and the debris may damage your child’s eye. Protective eyewear should block both the UVA and UVB rays of the sun (learn more).

About cataracts

How it works

Effective skin cancer treatment

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US, so that’s the reason why the spotlight has been turned on skin cancer treatment in the last couple of years. In the US, the rate of this type of cancer is rising among people of color, therefore sun protection awareness campaigns are increasingly being focused on these groups.  Common treatments for skin cancer include Mohs surgery, Cyrotherapy, and excisions.

There are several types of skin cancer, with the most common being basal cell carcinoma or BCC. BCC refers to abnormal lesions that arise in the basal cells that are found deep in the epidermal layer of the skin.Squamous cell carcinoma is another type of skin cancer. It develops in the squamous cells that are on the outer part of the epidermis. These cancers often occur on those areas of the body most often exposed to the sun.

Skin Cancer Treatment

  • Mohs surgery is used to treat a variety of skin cancers.  During the procedure, thin layers of skin tissue are removed and examined under a microscope,and this will show up any cancer cells present. If they are there, then the surgeon will continue removing layers of tissue until a clear sample turns up. Surgery ends when a clear sample appears.

 

  •  Cyrotherapy, also known as Cyrosurgery is a type of skin cancer treatment that involves freezing cancerous skin lesions, and then destroying them. This is done by spraying very cold liquid nitrogen onto the abnormal cells. Patients may experience minimal pain when the nitrogen is applied to the skin, and there may also be some aching and throbbing. The area may blister, and fluid may need to be drained off. Cyrotherapy is often done in conjunction with other treatment options.

These skin cancer treatments generally have a very high success rates.

It is regularly performed in northern Virginia as an outpatient procedure, using general anesthesia. During surgery the surgeon will make a small incision in the eye. After this, a probe is inserted to break up the faulty lens. The lens is then removed and replaced with the IOL.
