How Long do Dermal Fillers Last?

If your face has lost its youthful fullness and wrinkles and fine lines are starting to appear, dermal fillers can help you reclaim a youthful appearance.  Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels that can make the face look plumper, smoother, and refreshed.  But how long do dermal fillers last?

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers, also known as soft tissue fillers, are used to give the face a fuller, smoother appearance.  Over time the face loses the plump appearance it once had and wrinkles and fine lines become more prominent.  Dermal fillers are injected below the skin and restore volume, smooth lines and wrinkles, and shape facial contours.   They can also be used to augment the lips.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler, and the area of treatment.

Type Of Filler

Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are the most commonly used fillers.  HA is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that keeps the skin plump and supple.   HA is used in the Juvederm family of fillers, Restylane, and Belotero Balance.  These fillers typically last 6-18 months.

There are other dermal fillers that contain calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which last 1-2 years.

Area Of Treatment

Dermal fillers used to fill in wrinkles and folds around the nose and the corners of the mouth typically last up to one year.  Fillers used for lip augmentation last one year or more.  However, fillers used to contour the cheeks, such as Juvederm Voluma, can last up to 2 years.

The body gradually breaks down the filler material in the weeks after treatment, so the speed with which this process takes place also impacts longevity.

Although fillers are a temporary facial rejuvenation solution, maintenance treatments can extend the results.
