Botox is a top cosmetic treatment used by men and women wanting to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and maintain a youthful appearance. Despite the popularity of botox, there is still some uncertainty about the longevity of the procedure, so many people considering botox often ask the question – How long does botox last.
What is botox?
Botox is a drug that is derived from botulinum toxin type A. It is a neuromodulator that works by relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles to develop. Dynamic wrinkles are formed by repetitive muscle movement and include forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.
How botox works
Botox interrupts the transmissions that are normally sent from the nerves to the muscles, so the muscles don’t contract. As a result, the existing wrinkles eventually soften, and no new wrinkles form.
There is no downtime after botox, but patients are advised not to rub or massage the injection site for at least 24 hours.
The effects of botox are not immediate, most patients start to notice some improvement about 3-5 days after treatment, but full results can take up to 2 weeks.
How long does botox last?
Botox is a temporary treatment, so the results typically last 3-6 months, but this may be shorter for first time users. However, results sometimes last longer for people that have undergone repeated treatments (read more).
Once the effects of botox wear off muscle activity will restart, so the lines and wrinkles will once again be visible on the face. Consequently, a follow-up session will be needed in order to maintain the results.
