Will a tummy tuck leave scars?

If you are planning to have a tummy tuck, you are probably curious to find out if it will leave a scar.  Tummy tuck surgery also known as abdominoplasty is a procedure that removes excess abdominal skin and tightens the underlying muscles, to make the tummy firmer and flatter.  But does it leave a scar.

Does a tummy tuck leave scars?

Yes, a tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that requires incisions, so there will be scars after the procedure.   However, there are various techniques that can be used to perform a tummy tuck, and this will determine the size and shape of the scar (read more).

The incision for a full tummy tuck is typically made just above the pubic area and extends from hip to hip.  The resulting scar is usually well-hidden in the bikini line.  A mini-tummy tuck is recommended for patients with less loose skin and belly fat. The incision for the mini-tummy tuck is less extensive, so the scar is several inches shorter.

Minimizing tummy tuck scars

Although a tummy tuck will leave scars, there are advanced incision techniques that surgeons can use to make them less noticeable.  Therefore working with an experienced, board certified plastic surgeon is one way to minimize visible scarring after a tummy tuck (click here to learn more).

Patients can also reduce scarring after a tummy tuck by following the post-op instructions of their plastic surgeon regarding caring for incisions.  There are also products and techniques that can be used to diminish scars.
